Samsung Foundry is reportedly reconsidering its SF1.4 process development, with growing speculation that the next-generation semiconductor node may be canceled due to ongoing yield issues and production challenges. The foundry division has faced continuous struggles, putting its competitiveness against TSMC’s 3nm process at risk.
While TSMC has successfully commercialized its 3nm technology, Samsung Foundry is still working to improve yields on its existing nodes. The Exynos 2500, which was initially expected to power the Galaxy S25 series, was skipped for that lineup but is now being considered for the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip FE.
Amid the foundry challenges, Samsung has reportedly approached TSMC for the manufacturing of Exynos chips meant for Galaxy devices. However, the Taiwanese chipmaker declined the deal, with the reasons remaining undisclosed. This development further complicates Samsung’s chip strategy, as the company now faces internal uncertainty regarding its semiconductor business.
The chipset division’s future remains uncertain, as internal reports suggest tensions between Samsung Foundry, System LSI, and the MX Division. A recent rumor indicates that Samsung Mobile President TM Roh is against integrating System LSI engineers into the MX Division for Exynos research and development. Previously, Samsung was reportedly considering merging System LSI into the MX Division to create in-house processors specifically designed for Galaxy smartphones.
Looking ahead, Samsung is shifting its focus to the Exynos 2600, which could be its first 2nm chipset. If development progresses as planned, the Exynos 2600 is expected to be featured in the Galaxy S26 series, marking a potential comeback for Samsung’s in-house processors in its flagship lineup. However, the future of Samsung’s foundry business remains uncertain, as the company grapples with manufacturing roadblocks, internal conflicts, and increasing competition from TSMC.
