Motorola has begun teasing its next foldable device ahead of CES 2026 with a creative invitation that doubles as a folding lamp. The wording and design strongly point to a book style foldable smartphone, marking a potential shift beyond the Razr Flip lineup.
Motorola is once again stirring curiosity in the Android world, this time with an unconventional CES invitation that may be hinting at a major new foldable phone. Ahead of its January 6, 2026 showcase, the company sent select media a package that included a CES display invite and a wooden folding object that opens into a small lamp glowing with a soft red light.
Android Central Senior Editor Nicholas Sutrich was among those who received the package, and the design details quickly caught attention. The lamp unfolds end to end, uses magnets to stay open or folded back, and prominently features the Motorola M logo engraved into the wood. Alongside it is the phrase “every fold reveals a possibility,” a line that appears deliberately chosen.
The invitation itself adds to the speculation. Motorola says it is “getting ready to unfold a new perspective” at its January event. That language stands out because Motorola’s current foldable portfolio focuses entirely on clamshell Flip phones, most notably the Razr series. A shift in messaging toward “unfolding” suggests a different kind of foldable experience, one that aligns more closely with book style devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup.
If this interpretation proves accurate, Motorola could be preparing to enter the large screen foldable category for the first time in years. A book style foldable would position the company directly against rivals such as Samsung, Google, and Honor, all of which are pushing productivity focused foldables that blur the line between phone and tablet.
Another notable clue is the use of wood in the teaser design. Motorola has a long history of experimenting with alternative materials, dating back to the Moto X era in the mid 2010s when users could customize their phones with bamboo, walnut, teak, and other finishes. More recently, the Motorola Razr 2025 Mountain Trail edition reintroduced thin wood inlays, reinforcing the brand’s willingness to explore materials beyond glass and metal.
The wooden construction of the folding lamp may be symbolic rather than literal, but it raises the possibility that Motorola’s next flagship foldable could feature a distinctive back finish or design accent. In a market where many foldables look increasingly similar, material innovation could become a key differentiator.
How closely the lamp’s folding mechanism mirrors the actual device remains unknown. The lamp unfolds in a continuous motion and glows from within, which may simply represent the idea of transformation rather than the physical engineering of the phone itself. Still, the emphasis on folding, unfolding, and discovery clearly signals that Motorola wants to reset expectations.
For Android users, this tease matters because it suggests renewed competition in the premium foldable segment. More players experimenting with form factors, materials, and software experiences typically leads to faster innovation and better long term value. Motorola’s near stock Android approach could also offer a different take on multitasking and large screen optimization compared to heavily customized interfaces.
All questions should be answered on January 6, 2026, when Motorola takes the stage at CES. Until then, the company’s imaginative teaser has done its job, putting a potential book style foldable firmly on the radar of Android enthusiasts and industry watchers alike.
