Google and Apple Team Up to Deliver Seamless Android to iPhone Switching

Google and Apple have taken an unusually cooperative step to ease one of the most persistent pain points in the mobile ecosystem, namely moving personal data between Android and iPhone devices. The latest Android Canary build, released today under version ZP11.251121.010 for all Pixel models, contains the first visible elements of this joint effort. Apple is preparing corresponding support in an upcoming iOS 26 developer beta.

Both companies confirmed that the new system will integrate directly into the initial device setup flow. This means users activating a new phone will no longer rely solely on standalone migration utilities and instead will be able to transfer a broader set of data types through a more unified mechanism. Both Google and Apple have indicated that they will incorporate additional capabilities prior to the public launch.

As expected, these early implementations reside in developer-focused channels. Android Canary builds regularly ship with instability and experimental code, and Apple’s iOS developer betas follow the same pattern. Google notes that the feature will migrate to the Android Beta program as it matures, although there is no firm timeline for public availability. The final rollout on Android will also depend on device-specific support, which can add further variability.

For now, cross-platform switchers still have access to Apple’s Move to iOS app on the Play Store and Google’s Android Switch app on iOS. The new collaboration suggests both companies are trying to lower platform lock in friction, a notable shift in a market where ecosystem barriers have historically been strategic assets.
