
Google held its Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 on May 12, one week ahead of Google I/O, and used the event to walk through the major Android 17 features arriving later this year. Gemini Intelligence: What It Is and How It Differs from What’s Already There

The practical difference, according to Google, is context. Gemini Intelligence is designed to understand what you’re doing across apps, not just respond to isolated requests. It’s intended to power several of the Android 17 features described below rather than live in its app. Google said initial rollout will prioritize Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices before expanding to other Android hardware.
Multi-Step App Automation
This is the feature Google leaned on most heavily to demonstrate Gemini Intelligence in action. The idea is that Gemini can now handle tasks that cross multiple apps without you managing each step yourself. Google’s examples included booking fitness classes, handling travel planning, and managing email workflows.
The control model matters here. Google said the system requests user confirmation before completing actions, so the automation handles the steps and you approve the result. That’s a meaningful design decision, since fully autonomous cross-app actions with no user checkpoint would be a harder sell for most people.
Rambler: Real-Time Voice-to-Text That Cleans Itself Up
Rambler is a new dictation feature built into Gboard and powered by Gemini. The core function is converting spoken words to typed text, which Android has been able to do for years. What Rambler adds is real-time cleanup.
As you speak, Rambler removes filler words, restructures run-on sentences, and formats the output before it lands in whatever app you’re typing into. Google said it handles multilingual input and does not store audio on remote servers, processing locally instead. For anyone who uses voice input to draft messages or notes, it addresses the main problem with current dictation: the output usually needs editing before it’s usable.
Android 17 Create My Widget
Create My Widget lets users generate custom home screen widgets by typing a plain-language description of what they want. Google’s examples covered fitness trackers, weather layouts, and meal planning displays. The feature extends across Wear OS and Android Auto, not just phone home screens.
The practical limitation right now is that it’s not clear how deeply these generated widgets can pull live data versus displaying static or templated information. Google’s demos looked polished but didn’t show edge cases. This is one to watch when Android 17 ships to see how it holds up against real-world requests.
Gemini in Chrome for Android
Starting in June, Gemini will handle tasks directly inside Chrome on Android. Google said the integration can summarize pages, compare information across tabs, and trigger cross-app actions like adding calendar events or saving notes without leaving the browser.
This is a meaningful use case for people who spend a lot of time researching on their phones. Reading and acting on information without toggling between apps is a genuine workflow improvement if the execution is reliable.
Security and Privacy Scam and Fraud Protection
Android 17 brings two notable additions here. The first is verified banking call protection, built through partnerships with select financial institutions. When a call comes in claiming to be from a bank, Android can check whether it’s actually originating from that institution and block it if the number is spoofed. Google said suspicious calls can be flagged or disconnected automatically.
The second is an expansion of live threat detection. The existing system looks for suspicious app behavior. Android 17 extends that to include apps that attempt to forward SMS messages, run hidden background processes, or misuse accessibility features. Importantly, Google said this detection runs on-device without sending data to external servers.
Chrome on Android also gets malware scanning under the new release, using what Google describes as dynamic signal monitoring to flag risky behavior before it affects the user.
Device Security
The Find Hub “Mark as Lost” feature gets a significant upgrade. In Android 17, marking a device as lost triggers biometric locking in addition to the standard PIN or password requirement. That means someone who knows a device’s passcode still cannot unlock it. The feature also hides Quick Settings when the device is locked, which prevents a thief from disabling Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to avoid location tracking.
Theft protection features, including remote lock and theft detection, will be enabled by default on new Android 17 devices and extended to existing devices running Android 10 and later in certain markets. Failed PIN attempts now trigger longer lockout delays, and lock screens will display the device’s IMEI for easier recovery verification.
For users who want maximum protection, Advanced Protection mode in Android 17 adds tighter restrictions: non-accessibility apps lose access to accessibility services, device-to-device unlocking is disabled, and Chrome’s WebGPU support is turned off. Scam detection also extends to chat notifications under this mode.
Privacy Controls
Android 17 adds temporary location sharing, so users can grant an app location access for a defined period rather than indefinitely. The OS will also show clearer indicators when an app is actively reading location data.
The contact picker is redesigned to give apps access only to the specific contacts a user selects rather than the full address book. One-time passwords shown in notifications will be hidden automatically after use, reducing the window for someone watching over your shoulder to grab them.
Creator Tools
Screen Reactions lets users add live reactions to screen recordings and shared content. Ultra HDR upload support comes to more apps and platforms. Google also said it improved the screen recording interface, though specifics on what changed were limited during the Android Show presentation.
Pause Point: Digital Wellbeing
Pause Point is a 10-second delay that appears when you open an app that you’ve flagged as distracting. The screen prompts you to pause before continuing, with suggestions to do something else instead. Google described it as a tool to reduce compulsive app checking rather than a strict blocker.
Whether users will find a 10-second delay meaningfully disruptive or simply an extra tap is a fair question, but it’s a lighter-touch approach than screen time limits, which many people bypass anyway.
iPhone to Android Transfer
Google said Android 17 improves the process of switching from an iPhone. The updated transfer tool handles the wireless migration of data, apps, home screen layout, and now eSIM transfer as well. Pixel and Samsung devices will support the eSIM migration first.
eSIM portability has been one of the more persistent friction points in the iPhone-to-Android switch. If the execution is reliable, it removes one of the remaining reasons someone would delay the switch until their carrier contract ends.
Gemini in Android Auto and 3D Google Maps
Gemini comes to Android Auto with context-aware features, including suggested replies based on incoming messages, voice-based actions for things like ordering food, and broader assistant capabilities while driving.
Google Maps on Android Auto is getting a 3D navigation overhaul that renders roads, traffic signals, and terrain with more visual detail than the current flat interface. The goal is clearer navigation at a glance without requiring the driver to interpret a simplified map.
Rollout and Availability
The stable version of Android 17 is expected to launch in June or July 2026. Most of these features are expected to arrive around the Pixel 11 launch window in August or September, or possibly through a later Android 17 QPR release. Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices are first in line, with broader Android rollout following later in the year.
